Crime Scene Processing

The success of a criminal investigation often hinges on the initial response and the thoroughness of crime scene processing. This Crime Scene Investigations Course equips students with essential skills for properly documenting scenes, identifying, processing, and collecting evidence, and preparing to testify on their findings. Designed for basic to intermediate-level investigators and technicians, and forensic science teachers. This course is ideal for those with limited field experience and experienced investigators that need a refresher on new procedures and processing techniques.
Course Structure
Instruction is delivered through engaging lectures followed by hands-on exercises, ensuring students can immediately apply the concepts learned. Photography plays a crucial role in crime scene documentation and evidence processing, and students will incorporate photography into the hands-on processing segments.
Required Equipment
Students must bring the digital camera, lenses, tripod, and high-intensity flashlight they use in their department. Exceptions can be made if your agency uses a different method to photograph scenes.

  • Bloodstain Pattern Analysis – Identifying and interpreting blood evidence
  • Chemical Processing for Blood Evidence – Use of Amido Black, Leuco Crystal Violet, Bluestar, and phenolphthalein
  • DNA Evidence Collection – Proper handling and preservation techniques
  • Detection of Cleaned-Up Crime Scenes – Methods for uncovering hidden evidence
  • Latent Print Development – Including superglue fuming, powder processing, and ninhydrin application

Advanced Crime Scene/Death Investigations

This is an unbelievably in-depth crime scene investigation course. This goes well beyond fingerprints and foot impressions.  We start with a refresher of basic processing and then smash forward into death scenes, processing bloody fingerprints, more advanced photography, and search warrants.  
We cover numerous aspects of major crime scene investigations including using digital and social media to identify suspects.
  Determine how to properly document and collect evidence at a death scene.  Students will learn critical thinking skills to solve the puzzle.  Learn how to determine the Mode of Death, Cause of Death and Manner of Death.  Bloodstain and bullet trajectory documentation will be covered. Students will need to bring their own camera to learn proper photography techniques and proper documentation.

Fingerprinting Extravaganza!

Dusting for fingerprints is the building block of crime scene processing.  This class provides students the opportunity to understand the basics of fingerprint identification.  Students will process dozens of items using powders, chemicals, fuming chambers and other other proven techniques. Proper documentation and photography will be practiced throughout the course.

Social Media and the Police/Right-to-Know

This class will show you the positives and negatives of social media in Law Enforcement.  How many times have you read that an agency is embarrassed by an officer’s social media post? This class will help train officers how to avoid dangerous pitfalls of social media that could result in lawsuits and termination of employment. 
 It will also show investigator how to use social media to solve crimes and investigate suspects.   There is a wealth of information out there waiting for investigators to explore.

Credit Card Fraud Investigation

This course can be altered to accommodate one or two days of instruction. Credit Card & Fraud Investigations was designed to provide critical knowledge to patrolmen and detectives who are called to investigate credit card and fraud-related crimes. This course will explain how criminals re-encoded credit cards/gift cards with stolen identities via stolen information obtained from fuel pump & ATM skimmers and the dark web. In addition to credit card skimming, this course covers other types of fraud, such as account takeovers, identity theft, re-packaging scams, and dark web scams. Fraud cases ARE solvable! Students will learn through hands-on demonstrations to manufacture re-encoded credit cards!

De-escalation Techniques and Dealing with Mentally Ill Individuals

Police officers encounter individuals who have a mental illness or are experiencing an emotional crisis regularly. This course is meant to help police officers effectively deal with individuals that are experiencing a crisis. Crisis can include angry individuals, suicidal subjects, or those who have mental illness. Numerous de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques will be taught and practiced in this class. It has become the norm for police officers and dispatchers to be the first to encounter individuals experiencing suicidal ideation or a mental crisis. Do you know what to do?
